Dental PSSR testing

Steam sterilising autoclaves and their associated pipework and protective devices are covered by the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1992.

Owners and users of systems must show that they are aware of the safe operating limits of their equipment, must have a written scheme of examination for their equipment, and must adhere to this inspection schedule by arranging examinations by a “competent person”.

Dental X-Ray Testing

X-ray equipment must comply with the provisions of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017.

Under this legally enforced standard, your x-ray equipment must be properly maintained, and it must be regularly tested.

Most x-ray equipment should be tested annually to see that it is good working order.

Radiological checks should be carried out at intervals of less than three years for some dental x-ray equipment, and annually for others. It must also be tested after any major repairs.

The Department of Health’s “Health Technical Memorandum 01-05: Decontamination in primary care dental practices” sets the standards of decontamination and sterilisation that must be met by your dental practice.

These rules set both “essential quality requirements” that must be met, and “best practice recommendations” towards which each practice should be working.
